We recently heard a new term - Naturehood. What is that you ask? It's nearby easy to access nature. It includes backyards, people, landscape, wildlife, trees lining sidewalks... Nature is actually everywhere and your Naturehood is the nature next to you every day.
In most Michigan cities we are blessed with an abundance of Naturehood. Our streets are lined with trees, our neighbors have beautiful gardens, many of us live near an inland or great lake. When we create a pond or fountain in your yard we are adding to the Naturehood you already have. When you pause in the morning to notice the pink sky with your cup of coffee you are interacting with nature.
To enjoy the benefits of nature you don't have to leave your own yard or neighborhood. Studies have shown that just hearing running water has beneficial effects on the brain and well-being. When we bring a water feature into a clients yard we think about the many benefits that water will have if placed properly on a property to accentuate the perceptual experiences of the homeowner.
For instance, we will face the feature toward the home or patio for visual interest, try to create a musical quality to the waterfall for auditory pleasure, set larger rocks near the edges to encourage people to sit and dangle their legs in the water or feed the fish. Water in your yard creates a Naturehood that benefits all 5 senses and doesn't require a trip in the car or a planned outing. So whether you are adding a formal fountain or ecosystem pond your body and mind will benefit!
